Virtual Residency Day Four of the Virtual Cities and Oceans of If Project: HOPE

Cynthia Pannucci from ASCI.org, the organization that brings artists and scientists together, has given her organizational support to this Virtual Residency linking four countries, India, Korea, Italy and Vinalhaven Island (I refuse to say we are part of the United States, no matter what it says on paper).

I am a person who is determined to dream and act on my dreams. But I am actually quite fragile and stumble very easily. When I hear, as I did in Grist today that Orca Whales have more mercury than Polar Bears, I weep. When I read that all the tragedies of Katrina were human error, sloppiness, laziness, I despair as I did today reading excerpts from, "Breach of Faith", by Jed Horne. As I put this event together, I am so grateful for those who are contributing time and effort with the faith that this is another drop in an ocean of Hope.

One of the reasons I am doing this project to address global warming is a comment made at the opening of The Drop show I was in at Exit Art this Spring. The comment was that the reason people are not making the changes we must to avert global warming, is that they are paralyzed by fear. I want this project to communicate that those changes may actually be exciting, even fun. It is all a state of mind.

So when any of us rises above our own fearful selfishness, myself included and reaches out to make something wonderful and meaningful happen, no matter how modest, my heart is full and sings.

Thank you, Cynthia Pannucci, from ASCI.org. I urge you all to vsit this wonderful site and see the wonderful work being done there.

    Dear Aviva ~

It saddens me too how innocent animals around the world are dying from the stupidity and short-sightedness of humans. It's all about greed... AND a pervasive lack of connectedness to or understanding of the interdependent ecological systems that sustain all life on our "blue" planet.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, the only thing to do is to be courageous and find our own voice by doing what we can in terms of increasing public awareness. It's "numbers" [of people] that matter to and will put pressure on lawmakers to vote for legislation that is pro-sustainability and environment. Individuals in every segment of our society need to do something. Store owners could put posters in their store windows about environmental issues that they feel the strongest about, cab drivers could have discussions with their riders who want to talk, fashion designers are beginning to design with sustainable fibers and produce with sustainable/non-polluting methods, the first wind farm is happening against the wishes of the Kennedy family in the waters off the Nantucket coast, feature length films and theatre performances are highlighting environmental issues -- positive things ARE beginning to happen here! We can't allow ourselves to feel impotent, that the problem is too big, because it's the actions of individuals that make change... one inspiring another.

Artists can play an important role in increasing public awareness by providing the frameworks for individuals to participate in peaceful, powerful, and highly-visible displays of personal expression about the critical environmental issues of our time. Brava, Aviva for your actions!

ASCI is currently developing an online exhibition project called ARTISTS FOR THE OCEAN. For details about particpating, visit: http://www.asci.org/artikel806.html

I join you in daring to dream and act,
