"Lines of Demarcation Early Spring
1998 Compared to late Fall "
2008

Monitoring change at the "Ghost Nets" site has been a consistent concern into the present. When bio-engineering the salt marsh restoration on the site, three critical markers were established. One was the storm surge line, to track the highest known point of flooding since 1994. That is observed for sea level rise. The second was the wave attenuation barrier to track sedimentation in the estuary. The third, shown here, was the "Line of Demarcation" between uplands spartina plantings and unrestored rip rap. On the left shot in 1998, that line is digitally indicated. On the right, shot ten years later, the same site is seen. It shows the slow progression of plant colonization, including the base of a volunteer spruce tree that has grown up since 1998.
